The Prophet Speaks: Pastor Dr. Shannon Mason

As They Went

“As Jesus continued on toward Jerusalem, he reached the border between Galilee and Samaria. As he entered a village there, ten lepers stood at a distance, crying out, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” He looked at them and said, “Go show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed of their leprosy.” –Luke 17:11-14

Jesus, on His way to Jerusalem is met by ten individuals who are well acquainted with the sudden and unexpected disconnect that can characterize this life. They are lepers and because of their condition, their lives have been marked by disconnection. They have been disconnected from the physical and relational life of their communities for fear of contamination. By extension, they have been disconnected from the spiritual life and customs of their communities. They have become disconnected from all that was familiar and in many ways disconnected from themselves (where else do you see Jews hanging out with Gentiles?)

Yet even in their disconnected state they have heard some rumblings about Jesus and when He comes to town, although they know they have no right to approach Him and they have no real revelation of who He is, they have reason to believe that He can do something about their situation and so they begin to cry out and hope that He will respond. “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” Jesus says, “Go, show yourselves to the priests…and as they went they were cleansed of their leprosy”

Notice at least three things. First, that in sending them to the priests, Jesus is instructing them to go back to the very place that had excluded them, the place of failure, the place of pain and rejection and present themselves to be considered again.

Second, notice that they begin moving in the direction of Jesus’ commandment although there is no indication that any part of their natural reality has changed. Their bodies are still decaying. Their hearts are still broken. In other words, Jesus does not provide any external validation that their going will be successful- nor do the lepers require it in order to start moving. They take His word (“Go show yourself to the priest”) and consider what He has spoken enough!

Third, notice that the transformation happens as they went. Apparently, the grace for the transition is in the path towards the priest, and the only way that they could walk into that grace is to begin moving.

This is indeed an “as they went” season. No longer can we use “praying about it”, “processing it”, and “preparing for it” to conceal our lack of commitment to “doing it”. The Lord has spoken to the disconnects in our lives through His Word, through His prophets, through dreams, through visions, through revelations, and even through the desires of our own hearts (for it is He who gives our hearts what to desire, Psalm 37:4). The instruction is clear. It is not necessarily logical, but it is clear. There IS grace available for the transition, but the grace will be revealed “as they went”. So go ahead, and do it again- this time because Jesus said so!

Pastor Dr. Shannon M. Mason was born in Orange, New Jersey to Reginald and Sandy Mason. Under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Byron E. Lennon, Sr., and the embrace of the Divinity Missionary Baptist Church family, she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at the age of 12, and a passion for the work of ministry was sparked. Having served faithfully in many areas of ministry under the leadership of Pastor Lennon and later, Pastor Betty Picott of Living Word Ministries in Trenton, NJ, she was licensed to the ministry of the gospel in April 1999 and ordained as an elder in December 2004 by Pastor William Staton of Mt. Moriah Christian Worship Center in Somerset, NJ. Being lead by the Spirit of the Lord into the pastorate, New and Living Way Ministries was born in September of 2004 and Pastor Mason was installed as the senior pastor. Since that time, New and Living Way Ministries has grown to be an equipping ministry whose love, passion for the Word of God, and worship of God has drawn people to a greater understanding of their purpose in the kingdom of God. New and Living Way Ministries is about the business of “Reconciling hearts and fulfilling destiny”. Pastor Mason is honored and humbled to serve under the covering of Bishop Loretta Smith-Koffi of Shekinah Glory Christian Church in Newark, NJ.

Pastor Mason holds a Bachelors’ degree in psychology from Trenton State College, a Master’s degree in psychological services from the University of Pennsylvania and an earned Doctorate in counseling psychology from Temple University. Her passion is for the reconciliation of the broken and the mobilization of the Body of Christ to be a prophetic witness to the kingdom of God and God’s vision for His creation.

(tears)…for the first time…I don’t know what to say!!! THANK YOU Dr. Shannon for sharing this on time word from the Lord. For two weeks now I’ve had something before the Lord on the altar.I appreciate the confirmation and the announcement of the “AS THEY WENTA SEASON”. I receive this word as a “push” into my purpose and out of the cycles of delay, from the cycles of “just praying about it”, “processing it”, “preparing for it”, but swiftly moving into actually “doing it”. The day of “disconnection” is OVER, and I celebrate my reconnection with purpose and destiny. I have feasted greatly from this word. I celebrate you as a tremendous gift and jewel to the Kingdom.

    God’s Speed,

I am inspired to do the bidding of the Lord at His word by faith. Their faith was so in tact that they didn’t hesitate to do what Jesus said but went and received just what they were believing for! This word is speaking directly to my life right now. I receive it and will be on my “as they went” journey!

    Pastor Shannon,

Just what I needed for this hour of my life. Facing so many things at once that sometimes it seems better to just do nothing! But I am glad that I stopped by for the word. I am encouraged that as I go this time God is going to work some things out of me and for me all at the same time!

Looking forward to seeing you real soon!
